An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
