Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
