Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
